with the Army XII Artillery Corps. Like so many servicemen,
he frequently sent letters to his mother, expressing how he
missed home and his family. She kept these letters in an old
shoebox that has survived to this day.

At
the end of the war, he returned home to make a life for himself.
He married Margie Lee Windsor of Onancock on August 18, 1946.
They made their home in Parksley, Virginia where Harrison
started working in the retail business. He worked as a clerk
in Murray's Five and Dime, which occupied the same building
in which Jaxon's now resides.
When Murray's closed,
Harrison and Jack Kimmel bought the building and began the
business known today as Jaxon's.
In
the early years, a soda fountain ran along one side of the
store. Harrison's wife, Margie Lee, baked homemade pies, cooked
homemade soup and dipped ice cream for hungry customers. As
time went by, the business grew and it was necessary to double
the size of the building.
